Science Education and Popularization Programmes (SEPP)

For whom

  • School and University Science Societies registered with NSF

The scheme provides financial assistance for programmes organized by Schools and University Science Societies registered with NSF, and programmes organized by reputed scientific institutes registered with STMIS targeting school and university community. Programmes will be considered in two major categories as Science Education Programmes and Science Popularization Programmes. Eligibility criteria

  • Applicant must be a citizen of Sri Lanka.
  • Applications must be from School Science Societies or University Science Societies registered with NSF or from Reputed Scientific Institutes registered with STMIS.
  • Applications are eligible only from Science Societies registered more than three (03) months prior to the date of application.

Time frame
Less than six months
  • More than six months and up to 10 months
  • An extension can be requested by providing a proper justification
Directions for applicants
  • Application Form can be downloaded from below links or by an e-mail upon a request made by the applicant to the Science Popularization Division of NSF ( ).
  • The duly completed applications should be sent to “Director General, National Science Foundation, 47/5, Maitland Place, Colombo 07”.
  • Applications should be submitted at least 2 1/2 months prior to the commencement of the programme.
Terms and Conditions
  • Funding will be based on the recommendation of the NSF Working Committee on Science Popularization and the approval of the Board of Management of NSF.
  • Funding will not be provided for, accommodation, subsistence payments, and local transportation.
  • Maximum funds provided per applicant will be as follows:

Category B - Science Infrastructure Development Programme
Funding
  • Up to Rs.200, 000/-per programme per year per school / university/ institute.
  • 60% of the total requested funds will be released initially.
  • Remaining 40% of the requested funds will be reimbursed.
  • Up to Rs.1, 000,000/-per programme per year per school / university/ institute.
  • Total funds will be provided in two instalments as 40% and 40%.
  • Remaining 20% of the requested funds will be reimbursed.
  • The final Report and the financial statement of the programme authorized by the Principal (schools) / Bursar (universities)/ Head (institutes) should be submitted within one month after completion of the programme. If the grantee fails to submit above documents within the given period, the remaining funds (i.e. Category A: 40%, Category B: 20%) will not be reimbursed.
  • If the final report and financial statement are not submitted by the grantee, the remaining funds (i.e. Category A: 40%, Category B: 20%) will not be reimbursed, and the school / university/ institute will not be considered for any further financial assistance under this scheme.
  • Any balance funds should be returned to NSF by the applicant within one month after completion of the programme.
  • Sponsorship of the NSF should be clearly mentioned, and NSF Logo should be clearly displayed in all printed and electronic materials of the programme. If the grantee fails to fulfil this criterion, the school / university/ institute will not be considered for any further financial assistance under this scheme in the following year.
  • Funds will be released to the account of School Development Society in case of school children.
  • If NSF finds any form of misappropriation of funds provided by NSF, then legal action will be taken against them.

    • Request letter from the Principal through Zonal Director of Education (Schools) / Senior Treasure through Dean (Universities)/ Head (Scientific Institutes).
    • Report of the physical progress of the previous installment.
    • Financial statement authorized by the Principal (Schools)/ Bursar (Universities)/ Head (Scientific Institutes)
    • To reimburse the balance, the original receipts for expenses should be provided (Certified copies are not accepted).
    • A final report with the impact / outcome of the programme should be submitted to NSF at the end of the programme along with the financial statement for the whole programme authorized by the Principal (Schools)/ Bursar (Universities)/ Head (Scientific Institutes).
