Contribution of the Women in Science and Technology to the technology driven Sustainable Tourism Industry in Sri Lanka.

Tourism industry is one of the sectors that has the potential to develop and grow having substantial contribution to the socio-economic development. However, it is observed that female participation in the industry is very low especially the middle and senior management level where women in science could play a crucial role.

Recognizing the above gap, a conference was organized by the Sri Lanka National Chapter of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (SLNC/OWSD) led by its President Dr Thilina Wanigasekera, in collaboration with the National Science Foundation, UNESCO organization for Women in Science for the Developing World and the National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka which was held on 20th of December 2023. at the Auditorium of the NSF.

Keynote speech delivered by the veteran Prof. DAC Suranga Silva (Professor in Economics & Tourism/ Head of the Sustainable Tourism Unit / University of Colombo). The event was graced by the renowned speakers namely Dr Rajini Sulochana Segera (Founder CEO/Women in Management), Dr Sepalika Sudasinghe (Director General /NSF), Prof. Mahesh Edirisinghe (Vice Chancellor UNIVOTECH), Dr. Pathmasiri Ranasinghe (Principal Scientist/ Industrial Technology Institute) and Dr Himalee De Silva (Treasurer SLNC/OWSD, Senior Lecturer FIM/UOC & Entrepreneur). Ms Thilinakumari Kandanamulla, Scientific Officer of International Affairs Division played a lead role representing NSF in organizing the event successfully.

Dr Sepalika Sudasinghe highlighted that women in science can change the world by filling the gender gap in STEM fields, as it empowers women especially young women. She further stated that it also unleashes a wealth of creativity and innovation as well as inclusive and progressive society as a whole.
