Professor (Ms.) P. Shiromi Perera assumed duties as the new DG of the NSF

With an extensive academic and research background in biomedical sciences, Prof. Perera has made significant contributions to biochemistry, clinical research, and scientific leadership. She completed her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Colombo, followed by a Master’s degree at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. She later earned her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Kelaniya, specializing in clinical biochemistry and hematology.
 
Prior to joining the NSF, Prof. Perera has served as Head of the Department of Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya. In this role, she was actively engaged in teaching, research, and mentoring, reflecting her strong commitment to advancing scientific knowledge and nurturing future researchers and medical professionals.
 
Her research interests focus on red blood cell disorders, particularly hemoglobinopathies, red cell membranopathies, and enzymopathies. These studies contribute to improving the understanding, diagnosis, and management of hematological disorders both in Sri Lanka and internationally.
 
Beyond her academic achievements, She has played an active role in national science and research development. She has served on several Research Committees appointed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, contributing to research governance, policy development, and scientific quality assurance.
 
As Director General of the NSF, Prof.Perera is poised to strengthen Sri Lanka’s research ecosystem by promoting scientific excellence, enhancing stakeholder engagement, and supporting innovation-driven national development. Her leadership combines academic expertise, research excellence, and national-level policy engagement, positioning her as a key figure in advancing science, technology, and innovation in Sri Lanka.
