Sri Lanka Science & Engineering fair (SLSEF) is a national competition on science research projects and new inventions for school children and youth.

SLSEF is a platform for science students to discover their scientific genius and win public recognition at national and international levels.

SLSEF has been duly affiliated with Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in USA for the first time in October 2007. Therefore, winners of SLSEF each year who meet the eligibility criteria of Intel ISEF would get an opportunity to compete/participate at the Intel ISEF held in USA in the month of May each year.

National Science Foundation, Sri Lanka (NSF)

NSF is a government organization established under the Science and Technology Development Act No.11 of 1994. NSF is mandated to popularize science amongst the people.

Science Popularization Division (SPD) of the NSF conducts various activities to popularize science and inculcate scientific thinking amongst the school children and the general public under the theme “Science for all”. The main goal of the division is to produce a scientifically and technologically literate society that can appreciate the value of scientific methods. (NSF official web site: www.nsf.ac.lk)

SPD organize and conducts the Science Research Projects Competition. 

Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL)

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, (IESL), is the premier professional body for engineers in Sri Lanka. It has a history spanning a period of more than 100 years. Its membership which has grown over the years presently stands at around 10,000 covering almost all disciplines of engineering.

The ‘Junior Inventor of the Year Competition’ is a very famous competition among the young inventors which is organized annually by the IESL to promote creative and innovative thinking amongst school children. (IESL official web site: www.iesl.lk )

Ministry of Education (MOE)

SLSEF is an annual educational activity/event of the Sri Lanka education system.  Ministry also supports and assists in conducting the SLSEF.  Ministry will grant official clearance to teachers and students to participate at Intel ISEL and provide guidance to students in the preparation of projects through provincial zonal school authorities.

Objectives

  • To buildup scientific temperament and a culture of innovation amongst the youth
  • To capture innovative ideas from young inventors for the benefit of the industry and society
  • To promote and nurture innovations and inventions.

 

Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), USA
            
Intel ISEF is the world’s largest pre-collegiate celebration of Science, held annually in May, Intel ISEF brings together more than 1,200 students from over 40 nations to compete for over 900 prizes. There is US$ 2 million to be won including scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and the grand prize: a trip to attend the Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden. Science Service founded the ISEF in 1950 and Intel is the title sponsor of this prestigious international competition.

The 2007 fair drew more than 1,500 young scientists from 51 countries, regions, and territories to compete for scholarships and awards.

Affiliated competitions
The competitors for this fair will be selected from the following two competitions.

  • Science Research Project Competition (SRPC) of the National Science Foundation (NSF)  held in November each year.
  • Junior Inventor of the Year (JIY) competition of  the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) held  in October each year.

Selected projects of the above competitions will take part at the Sri Lanka Science & Engineering Fair (SLSEF) held in December each year.
Those who are eligible to participate at the Intel IESF will undergo a coaching sessions to gear up for their participation at the International level.

Junior inventor of the year competition

This is an annual event organized island wide by the IESL to promote creative and innovative thinking amongst school children.

This is open to all Sri Lankan children within the age group of 12 – 20 years.

Innovations / Research projects conducted in the field of Engineering will be considered under this competition.
