For Researchers and Scientists

The NSF initiates, facilitates and supports basic and applied scientific research by universities and science and technology institutions in the country. Funding is provided for R &D, scaling up projects, purchase of equipment and spare parts, and travel for scientific purposes. Human resource development in the country is promoted by offering postgraduate research scholarships, fellowships and research studentships .Read More


International Linkages

The NSF provides opportunities for Sri Lanka scientists to interact on a global level. It is the focal point for International Foundation of Science (IFS), International Council of Science (ICSU), the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), UNESCO sub-commission on Science, Third World Academy of Science (TWAS), among many others. It also hosts the National Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Committee and the National Bioethics Committee.


For Policy Makers

The NSF provides support for development of national policies related to S &T through the Science and Technology Management Information Systems (STMIS). It also carries out research to formulate current and projected need for scientific and other S&T related resources in Sri Lanka and provides a central clearing house for the collection, interpretation and analysis of S & T related data. For Industry Partners

The local industry, researchers and the society is served by disseminating major research findings/local knowledge to potential users and by facilitating transfer of technology imported or generated through research to stakeholders. The NSF also facilitates the Vidatha programme implemented by the Ministry of Science and Technology and acts as a catalyst between research output and commercialization. Read more


For School Children and General Public

Enhancing an appreciation of science among schoolchildren and the general public and strengthening science education in schools are important functions of the NSF. Carrying out School Science Society programmes, organizing workshops for teachers and students, conducting collaborative programmes with the media and supporting national level competitions are part of the agenda. The Journal of the National Science Foundation and the Vidurava Science Magazine are popular scientific publications of the NSF. Read more


Publication and Information Dissemination

The National Library and Resources Centre of the NSF acts as the national focal point for dissemination of information in the field of S &T. The NSF maintains its own in-house Printing Unit, which undertakes outside printing work. Read more
