Prof. Ananda Jayawardane is currently the Director General of the National Science Foundation and a Senior Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa. He is also the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa. He obtained BSc Engineering degree in Civil Engineering with first class honours from the University of Moratuwa in December 1983, a Master of Science Degree in Construction from the Loughborough University of Technology in the UK in 1986 and PhD in Construction Management in January 1990 from the same university.  

He is a Chartered Engineer, International Professional Engineer, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, a Fellow of the Institute of Project Managers, Sri Lanka, a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka and a Member of the Society of Structural Engineers Sri Lanka. He is also the past NDB Bank Endowed Professor in Entrepreneurship at the University of Moratuwa and a Past President of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka. He has served as the first Head of Department of Management of Technology, Head, Department of Civil Engineering and the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa.  

He has also served as a member of the governing Councils/Boards of National Institute of Education, Institute for Construction Training and Development, State Engineering Corporation, Post-graduate Institute of Management, Miloda Academy of Financial Studies, Sir Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies and the Open University of Sri Lanka.  Currently, he is a member of the Board of Management of the Construction Industry Development Authority and a non-executive Board Member of the Commercial Bank PLC and Sierra Cables PLC.  He has served in many other national committees such as the committee for the development of Science and Technology Policy, Science and Technology Strategy and University & Tertiary Education Policy.

He has co-authored a textbook on “Construction Productivity Management” published by Addison Welsley Longman, UK in 1998, contributed to three other textbooks and has published and presented over 80 research papers both locally and internationally in the areas of technology management, technology transfer, project management, education, social management systems, construction management and entrepreneurship.

He has received several awards for his research publications including Manaperi Award and Prof Varghese Award for his undergraduate research, the IESL Award for the best paper published in the Engineer Journal thrice, National Achiever’s Award  - 2013 under the category of Engineering awarded at the 8th Annual District Convention of the Lions Clubs International – District 306A1, the IESL President’s Award at IESL Engineering Excellence Awards – 2012 and the Asia’s Education Excellence Award -2016 for outstanding contribution to education at the 7th Asia’s Education Excellence awards and Sri Lanka Education Leadership Award - 2017 presented by World Education Congress and CMO Asia.  He is also a Commonwealth Fellow.
