The vast potential that opens up for Sri Lanka through biotechnology has long been recognized; as such biotechnology was identified as a thrust area by policy makers as well as the scientific community. Hence, the National Science Foundation (NSF) identified the need of a National Policy for Sri Lanka. The National Biotechnology Policy directed at harnessing the full potential of biotechnology for economic and social development of the country.
The Policy was developed jointly by the National Science Foundation (NSF) together with the National Science and Technology Commission (NASTEC) through an extensive consultation process, is now available for the public. This policy was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting held on 21 July 2010.
