National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI)

Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are fast emerging as multi disciplinary fields that can revolutionize the Sri Lankan economy. Sri Lanka has many resources including a large pool of skilled human capital which can be harnessed to develop this promising technology

Cabinet ministers on the recommendations of H.E. The President has endorsed the National Nanotechnology Initiative and approved the seting up of a Nanotechnology research center within Nanoscience park. The Ministry of Science and Technology of Sri Lanka made initiatives to launch the nanoscience project together with industrial nano2private sector early 2008. Under the project two institutions, NANCO and SLINTEC will be set up. NANCO will be the holding company that will own the nano park proposed to be established in Homagama. State of the art laboratories will come up in the park to facilitate private sector companies and other research institutions. Governments plan is to commit Rs. 6.5 Billion for the NNI. This initiative will facilitate scientists to investigate into applications in nanotechnology with a view to add value in practically every aspects of our exports hence achieving technological progress and competitiveness. Capture of nanotechnology wave in early stages will enable even technological leap frogging for economic development.  Apart from NANCO and SLINTEC, the National Science Foundation (NSF) plays a key role in executing the NNI. The National Nanotechnology Committee (NNC) was appointed by the NSF with a view to oversee the activities under the NNI at the NSF.

National Nanotechnology Policy

Nanoscience Park

The nanoscince park will create a conducive environment for local and international scientists to carryout research in Sri Lanka for the benefit of the local industry. It will help reverse brain drain. The government of Sri Lanka has already committed Rs. 350 million in this regard and it seeks assistance from donor agencies to build the proposed Park. It is planned to recruit 72 engineers and researchers initially. In the future, it will expand up to the foreign researchers as well. In addition to the innovation from R&D, spin-off companies originated from the Park will deliver economic gain for the country.

Other activities done by the NSF under the NNI

    • Funding research in nanotechnology carried out by researchers in Universities/institutions ( At present, research grant applications are not entertained by the NSF due to prevailing financial situation)
    • Awareness programmes (workshops, seminars, publications, etc.)  for the local industry, academia, schools and the general public
    • The National Nanotechnology Committee of the NSF oversee the activities under the NNI
    • Quiz competition on nanotechnology
