Digitization and Networking for Wider Access
National Digitization Project of the National Science Foundation was launched in 2011 with the aim of digitizing the collective literature out put of local research. Coupled with the National Network of Institutional Repositories project operated across academic, research and related institutions, a window in offered to discover and explore the scholarly literature of local scholars and to have convenient online access to the complete documents. The project will thereby support and promote productive research and innovation leading to Social and Economic Development in Sri Lanka.
Objectives
- To digitize scholarly literature of Sri Lankan origin
- To set up Institutional Repositories (IR) at the institutional level
- To ensure all research out put of local scientists are deposited in the respective Institutional Repositories
- To operate a National Network of Institutional Repositories among Academic, Research and related Institutions
- To provide high visibility to local research literature
- To offer resource discovery facilities across Institutional Repositories in the national network
- To ensure easy and quick online access to local scholarly literature
- To preserve the local scholarly literature

Which Institutions are eligible to join the project?
Research, academic and related institutions producing scholarly literature are eligible to participate.
What facilities will NSF offer to participating Institutions?
- Digitization of scholarly literature output of the institution
- Set up an Institutional Repositories (IR) on DSpace software to accommodate all literature output of the institution
- Provide training for staff on management and administration of Institutional Repositories
- Conversion of existing databases into DSpace databases
- Provide Equipment and hosting facilities for Institutional Repositories
- Provide temporary staff for data entry
- Technical support and trouble shooting
What are the obligations of the Participating Institutions?
- Host an Institutional Repository/Metadata database of Institutional scholarly literature
- Provide access to the full text of documents (free/on charge/limited access)
- Provide the NSF with a copy of the complete set of the digitized files for preservation purposes
