Discussions on Bilateral Scientific Cooperation between the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and NSF were initiated in November 2016 in Colombo. This activity was further strengthened by the visit of Prof. Joybrato Mukharjee, Vice President of DAAD to NSF on 25th April, 2017. Subsequent to a meeting held between the officials of NSF and DAAD on 23 October, 2017. The opening of an Information Cell on DAAD at the German Embassy in Colombo was occurred on the same day. A MoU on Bilateral Scientific Cooperation was signed between the National Science Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) on 6 April 2018.
 
The first Joint Call for Proposals on Project based Personnel Programmes (PPPs) under this MoU was launched in August, 2018 and Awareness programmes on same were conducted parallely at NSF, and the Universities of Moratuwa, Peradeniya and Colombo with the participation of the officials from NSF, DAAD office of the German Embassy of Sri Lanka and the DAAD Regional office of India. Two proposals were jointly selected for funding under this call. The second joint call on PPPs was open in August, 2019 and an Awareness Programme was held at NSF parallely on same. Proposals received under this call are being considered for joint funding at the moment.
 
Prof. Joybrato Mukharjee, President-Elect, DAAD and Dr Karja Larch, Director of the DAAD Regional Office in New Delhi, India visited NSF on 15.11.2019 and had further discussions on Bilateral Scientific Cooperation between the two organizations.
