Bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge generated through academic research and its implementation in the real world, the NSF organized the third programme in the series, “Research into Practice: Evidence Based Decision Making Programme" on 26th February 2024 at the Auditorium of the NSF with the participation of policy makers and practitioners in the construction industry in Sri Lanka including Urban Development Authority, Green Building Council of Sri Lanka, National Building Research Organization, National Engineering Research and Development Centre, Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau, Civil and Structural Engineering Consultants (Pvt) Ltd, Haritha Consultants, Ministry of Education, members of the Working Committee on Engineering Sciences, Architecture & ICT of the NSF, NSF grantees, Chairman, Director General and scientific staff of the NSF.

At this meeting, further development of a comprehensive whole building environmental life-cycle assessment software tool for construction industry of Sri Lanka was discussed in detail. The programme was conducted for a newly awarded research grant awarded to Prof. Shiromi Karunarathne (Principal Investigator), Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, with the objective of receiving input from policy makers and practitioners before completing the research project. The grantee presented the Building-Sustainability Assessment Tool (Building-SAT) (http://building-sat.com/), which has been already developed by her, which is the only web-based, freely available Software Tool (ST) in Sri Lanka at present for building life-cycle assessment and a new set of features and functionalities that will be added through the NSF grant. The stakeholders were very much interested in this software and provided positive feedbacks for improvements, thereby achieving the NSF objectives from this meeting.

The initiative “Research into Practice: Evidence Based Decision Making Programme” is a new Programme of the NSF implemented under the patronage of Dr Sepalika Sudasinghe, Director General/ NSF, with the blessings of Prof. Ranjith Senaratne, Chairman/NSF.
