The main activity of NSF is the awarding of Research Grants. These Grants are awarded on the recommendations of the relevant Committees, comprising of experts, who advise and assist the Foundation on matters pertaining to research & development, prioritization of research, S&T manpower and enhancement of research capacity and policies.
 
The Committees also advise on studies of national importance, organizing seminars and workshops, and promoting the publication of scientific material . They monitor the research progress and evaluate the final reports. Special Committees are appointed from time to time to oversee specific projects initiated by NSF, and carried out by scientific institutions throughout the country.
