10 Buildings and two water tanks have been constructed and 2003 handed over to the respective project institutions by the end of December 2003. Cumulative floor area is 10, 365 m². These includ two National Centres; Agriculture Biotechnology Centre at University of Peradeniya and National Centre for Microbial Culture Collection at University of Kelaniya, one Hostel Building, Three Lecture Hall buildings, Three Laboratories and Library.

2.a.) Faculty qualification Upgrading 

Total of 63 PhD programmes have been awarded for the staff of Science & Technology and Research & Development institutions, covering project thrust areas.

Total of 17 M.Sc and 3 Mphill programmes have been awarded to the S&T and R&D institutions, covering project thrust areas.

b.)  Staff Development & Training

Total of 604.5 person months of international short term training programmes have been awarded for 359 persons in S&T and R&D institutions as at end of June 2004, covering following areas;

The areas covered by this include (i) academic and organizational functions like curriculum development; teacher training and educational; continuing education and training of professionals; Manpower management information system and specialized skills like glass blowing and computer aided design, Multimedia and Language skills. (ii) Technical laboratory management such as for facilities and equipment maintenance and operations, language laboratory, computer education centre(iii) advanced degree/training in areas like information technology, Management, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Postgraduate Science educations, Engineering management and R&D research and management.

3.  Scholarship Programme

As at end June 2004, total of 1106 Scholarships (1093 for M.Sc level and 13 for P.hD Level programmes) have been awarded for disadvantage youth, including Women and to expand the enrollment base for S&T students. Female to Male ratio is 55: 45. The total cost of the programme is US$ 1.419 million.

4. Furniture & Equipment 

Scientific and IT equipment and furniture worth of US$ 15.98 million have been provided for projectS&T and R&D Institutions to upgrade the existing courses and workshop  & laboratory facilities and development of new PG courses.

5.Books and Instructional Materials 

Total of 15,920 numbers of Books worth of US$ 1.54 million and 111 specialized Software Packages worth of US$ 0.702 million have been supplied to the Project Institutions to upgrade the existing facilities in S&T and R&D libraries which will lead to the improved quality of graduates passed out in S&T sectors.

6.   Consultancy 

     The International and Local consultants have covered wide range of specializations and have been assisted the S&T institutions and R&D centers in all aspects of training and development, 

     a.  76 pm of international consultancies have been completed for S&T institutions and R&D      Centres.

     b.  06 pm of Local Consultancy have been completed for S&T and 01 pm have been   completed R&D Centers.

      c.143 .5 pm of International & Local Consultancy have been completed for PIU.

7. Institute Industry Partnership 

      a.  Awareness creation and reinforcement of the desired interaction by way of conducting workshops for leading chambers, Industries and formulation of subcommittee for each thrust areas, (awareness creation & reinforcement of the desired information).

       b.  Curricula Development with Industry participation

55 curricula have been developed covering 10 trust areas, to avoid the mismatch of S& T Personnel for industrial requirement by way of Seminars, workshops, industrial placements, communication skills development programmes, carrier guidance programmes … etc.

         c. Continuing Professional development programme;07 private sector resource personnel have been exchanged.

    d.  The National Level Committee for Institute/Industry Partnership has been set up. Sub Committees set up for all the 10 thrust areas. 24 sub committee meetings were conduct.

    e.  A cumulative total of 1061 students placements/Industry visits have been completed.
